Barnes and Childress Receive Preseason All-Conference Honors

BIRMINGHAM- Seniors Miyah Barnes and Rachael Childress were named to the 2019-20 C-USA Preseason Team, as announced by the Conference USA office on Wednesday.
Barnes led C-USA in assists last season with 158. She averaged 10.9 points and 4.8 assists per game and was named Conference USA All-Second Team in 2018-19. The Memphis, Tenn. native ranked sixth nationally in assist/turnover ratio (3.5). Barnes was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team after averaging 21 points in two games during the Blazers run to the conference semifinals.
Childress comes into the 2019-20 season as the nation's active career leader in three-pointers made with 312 career triples, eight shy of becoming UAB's all-time three-point shooter. Last season she ranked eighth nationally in 3-point field goals made (110), 12th in 3-point field goals made per game (3.3) and 20th in 3-point field goal percentage (.415). The Alabama native became the 29th member of the 1,000-point club in December of last season. Childress is a two-time All-Conference USA First Team honoree as well as C-USA Freshman of the year in 2016-17.
"Rachael and Miyah have shown tremendous leadership on and off the court for this program for the last three years," said head coach Randy Norton. "They are among some of the top players in our conference as well as in the country. We are grateful to have them represent UAB and I am proud of their accomplishments."
The Blazers were picked to finish fourth in C-USA behind defending conference champion Rice, Middle Tennessee and WKU. UAB finished last season second in the conference with a 12-4 record in league play.
UAB led Conference USA in scoring offense (73.3 ppg), 3-point FG percentage (.359), 3-point FG percentage defense (.273), assists (567), assist to turnover ratio (1.5), defensive rebounds (935) and 3-point FG made (291). The Blazers were ninth nationally in turnover ratio and 14th in 3-point FG percentage.
"Conference USA has so many great players and some of the best coaches in the country," added Norton. "Our conference once again will be extremely competitive, and our players know they have to be ready to go every single game."
Along with Barnes and Childress the blazers return two more starters and seven letter winners from last year's team and welcome four newcomers to the roster.
The Blazers host Miles College in an exhibition game Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Bartow Arena before opening the 2019-20 season at home against South Alabama on Thursday, Nov. 8.
