BIRMINGHAM – Looking to remain unbeaten in Conference USA play, the (RV) UAB women's basketball team continues league play on Thursday night when it welcomes Louisiana Tech to Bartow Arena. Tipoff between the Blazers and Lady Techsters is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
UAB (14-1, 2-0) is coming off of an 83-59 victory over FIU last Saturday in Miami. Rachael Childress led all scorers with 24 points on six made triples in the contest. Childress ranks fifth nationally in 3-point field goals made (54), 10th nationally in 3-point field goal attempts (131) and 11th in 3-point field goals per game (3.6).
C-USA's leader in points per game (79.8), the Blazers ranks 10th nationally in scoring margin (+22.8) and 24th in field goal percentage (46.0 percent). Katelynn Thomas ranks 15th in the NCAA in field goal percentage, shooting 60.9 percent (84-of-138) from the field and has finished in double figures in the previous three games.
A large reason for the offensive success is the Blazers ability to share the basketball as UAB ranks 12th nationally in assists (276) and 13th in assists per game (18.4). Individually, Miyah Barnes leads the squad, ranking 12th in the NCAA in assists (84), 26th in assists per game (5.6) and carries the sixth best assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5).
Louisiana Tech (8-7, 0-2) brings the league's leading scorer in Kierra Anthony (24.4 points per game), who ranks fourth nationally in points. Anthony has 11 20-plus point performances, including a 50-point game against Houston earlier in the season.
UAB and Louisiana Tech will meet for the eighth time in program history on Thursday night. The Blazers lead the series 4-3, but are 1-2 at Bartow Arena. The two squads split last season's series with both teams claiming road victories.
Prior to tip on Thursday, Childress will be honored in a pregame ceremony to recognize her 1,000th point. The junior became the 29th member of UAB's 1,000-point scorers club in the Blazers' 62-60 victory in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic Championship game.
Tickets to the game can be purchased online or at the Bartow Arena Ticket Office. Tickets are $5 for adults or $3 for kids 18 or younger.
Women's basketball season tickets are on sale by purchasing the Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home baseball and softball games in addition to all nine of women's basketball's remaining home contests. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
