MIAMI – The (RV) UAB women's basketball team improved to 14-1 on the season as it claimed its 10th consecutive win with an 83-59 victory at FIU on Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers remained unbeaten in Conference USA play, while it has won 10 consecutive games for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
"Today was a great effort by our entire team" head coach Randy Norton said. "Defensively we were outstanding on the glass limiting FIU to five offensive rebounds and held them to 21 percent from the 3-point line. Offensively we played with great pace and executed our half court offense well. I am proud of this team and their approach winning two tough games on the road."
Rachael Childress led a hot offensive team with a season high 24 points. The Moulton, Ala., native went 9-for-15 from the field, including being 6-of-9 from long range as she registered her fifth consecutive game to finish in double figures.
Miyah Barnes finished with 15 points and career high six rebounds, while also dishing out five assists and recorded a steal.
Katelynn Thomas rounded out the Blazers in double figures, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Defensively, UAB out rebounded the FIU 41 to 27, while it held the Panthers to just 4-of-19 (21 percent) from long range.
FIU opened the game hitting the first two baskets of the contest before Thomas would answer with a layup two minutes into the game. That sparked a 10-2 UAB run that would carry the Blazers into the first media timeout with a 10-6 lead. Barnes knocked down a triple with 2:27 left to stretch UAB's lead to six, its largest of the quarter, but a Panther layin with 13 seconds left cut the lead to three, giving the Blazers a 19-16 lead after the first quarter.
The teams continued to trade buckets in the opening minutes of the second quarter before Childress knocked down her first triple of the quarter with 6:14 left in the half to spark a 12-5 UAB run over the next four minutes, giving the Blazers a 37-25 lead. A 3-pointer from Barnes and consecutive layups from Thomas closed the half for the Green and Gold and gave the Blazers a 41-29 lead at halftime.
Childress opened the second half 4-of-5 from the field with 11 points as the Blazers knocked down five 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the half to lead 60-40 with 4:19 left in the quarter.
