BIRMINGHAM – The (RV) UAB women's basketball returns to the state of Florida on Thursday night when it opens Conference USA play at Florida Atlantic. Tipoff between the Blazers and Owls is set for 6 p.m. CST from FAU Arena.
Sitting at 12-1 on the season, UAB is off to its best start in school history and is coming off of an 83-58 victory over UAH on Sunday. The Blazers lead the league in points per game (78.8), fewest points allowed (56.3) and boast the 14th best scoring margin in the NCAA (+22.5).
The UAB offense has been dominant from long range, ranking 11th nationally in 3-point field goals made (125) and 16th in 3-point field goals per game (9.6). Rachael Childress is one of the top deep threats in the nation as the junior ranks eighth in the country in 3-point field goals made (44), 12th in 3-point field goals per game (3.4) and 13th in 3-point field goals attempted (113).
A large reason for the Green and Gold's success this season has been the ability to share and protect the basketball. UAB ranks 14th nationally in total assists (238), 20th in assists per game (18.3), while committing the fifth fewest turnovers per game (11.5). Miyah Barnes leads the conference in assists per game (5.6), total assists (73) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.3).
Florida Atlantic opens league play with a 3-10 record and are in the midst of a five-game losing skid. Juliette Gauthier leads the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game and is shooting 39.7 percent (46-of-116) from the field.
UAB and Florida Atlantic will meet for the ninth time in program history with the Blazers leading the series 8-2, including being 3-1 in Boca Raton. UAB defeated the Owls 90-57 last season in Bartow Arena, tallying its largest margin of victory in the series.
Thursday's contest will be streamed on C-USA TV or fans can purchase tickets online at FAUSports.com or at the FAU Arena Ticket Office. Tickets are $8 for adults or $5 for youth ages 3-12.
