BIRMINGHAM – At 15-2 on the season, the (RV) UAB women's basketball team continues Conference USA play on Thursday when it faces UTEP in El Paso. Tipoff between the Blazers and Miners is set for 8 p.m. CST.
UAB is coming off of a 71-60 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday. Miyah Barnes netted a season high 23 points on a career best nine made free throws. Barnes has been most helpful this season with her ability to share the basketball, ranking fifth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.6), 12th in assists (94) with a C-USA best 5.5 assists per game.
A staple for the Blazers in recent years is their ability to shoot the 3-point shot, ranking first in the league in 3-point field goals per game (9.4) and made 3-point field goals (160) and second in 3-point field goal percentage (36.6 percent). Individually, Rachael Childress ranks second in the NCAA in 3-point field goals made (64) and seventh in 3-point field goals per game (3.8).
UTEP (4-12, 1-2 C-USA) is in the midst of a two-game losing skid after opening league play with a win over UTSA. The Miners average the 13th fewest points in the conference (59.6) while giving up the ninth most (66.1).
Zuzanna Puc leads the Miners' offense, averaging 11.9 points per game, while connecting on 50 percent (76-of-152) of her shots from the field. The junior has netted double figures eight times this season with two 20+ performances.
UAB and UTEP are meeting for the 20th time in program history on Thursday night with the Blazers holding a one game, 10-9, advantage in the series. UAB will look to even up its record in El Paso as it enters the game 3-4 all time on the road against the Miners.
Women's basketball season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2018-19 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home baseball and softball games in addition to all six of women's basketball's remaining home contests. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
