CLEMSON, S.C. – The UAB volleyball team fell on the road Friday night to Clemson, 3-1, in the Blazers opening match of the Big Orange Bash.
Sophomore Abby Carlile once again led the UAB attack as she totaled 13 kills on the night, hitting at a clip of .296 percent. Emma Mitchell and Victoria Young added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Carlile now has 99 kills this season and is averaging 3.30 kills per set. On the year, she is hitting at a .346 clip. Mitchell and Young are second and third on the squad in kills with 85 and 63 kills to their name.
Shelby Holderfield fed the attackers all night as she put up 43 assists in the match and is now over 300 assists this season. The sophomore setter has 340 assists on the year and is averaging 10.62 per set. Emily Martinez chipped in from the back row, leading the Green and Gold with 17 digs.
UAB (6-3) trailed in the opening set 21-17 but rallied back thanks to kills from Emily Rudolph and Jillian Tinglin and attack errors from Clemson to cut the lead to 23-20. Following two more points for the Blazers, the lead was cut to one but UAB had to fight off set point before scoring four straight to win the first set 26-24.
The Green and Gold battled hard throughout the rest of the match but fell in the second set 22-25, dropped the third 23-25 and fell in the fourth set 25-27, losing to the Tigers 3-1.
"I liked the resiliency that we showed throughout the game," head coach Amy Pauly said. "There was never a point that the team played down or didn't give it their all. What we need to do a better job of moving forward is sustaining a high level of play through the entire set."
Clemson (5-3) trailed UAB at different times in every set, except the third, and had to fight back against the Blazers each time. Solei Thomas led the Tigers with 17 kills on the night while Ashtynne Alberts and Brooke Bailey added 15 and 10 kills for Clemson.
