BIRMINGHAM – After helping the UAB women's soccer team to its first win over Louisiana Tech in program history, junior defender Melissa Cameron has been named the Conference USA Defender of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Cameron is the 12th Blazer in program history to be recognized by the conference Defender of the Week, while it is the first time she has earned the honor in her career. UAB has now had three student-athletes named Defensive Player of the Week under head coach Erica Demers after Audria Wood (Sept. 11) and Natalie Presedo (Oct. 30) each earned the honor last season.
"Our backline as a whole has put in some great moments so far this season and to hold a high-powered attacking team like Louisiana Tech to very few chances on goal was not an easy task," Demers said. "A huge factor for a backline success has been Melissa (Cameron) and I couldn't be happier for her to receive this award. Her, along with fifth-year senior Alex Otto and sophomore Kassandra Daniels, have done a great job balancing our team defensively and helping to start our team attack."
Battling the extreme heat and facing off against one of the top-ranked teams in the league, Cameron played 70 minutes and anchored the Blazers' defense in a 1-0 victory over the Lady Techsters to open C-USA play.
The junior, who started her seventh-straight game on Sunday afternoon, played an instrumental role in helping UAB earn its first-ever victory over Louisiana Tech by holding the Lady Techsters to just three shots, none of which were on frame.
The Green and Gold have now posted three shutouts on the year and extended their unbeaten streak to four matches.
UAB opens a two-match road swing on Sunday when it travels to Boca Raton to take on Florida Atlantic. Kickoff from the FAU Soccer Stadium is slated for Noon CST and can be streamed live on CUSA.tv.
