BIRMINGHAM – After closing out a challenging non-conference slate with a three-match unbeaten streak, the UAB women's soccer team kicks off its new season on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Louisiana Tech to BBVA Compass field for its Conference USA opener.
UAB (3-3-1) enters the match boasting an 11-10-1 record in C-USA openers and an impressive 12-8-2 record in league home openers. The Blazers will also seek their first win over the Bulldogs on Sunday, entering the match 0-4 all-time against their C-USA rivals.
"We are starting off with one of the top teams in our conference and our team is looking forward to the new challenge," head coach Erica Demers said. "This week has been a reset for us. We take with us everything that we have learned from our first seven games, but we are back at 0-0 now. Sunday starts a new season for our team."
The Blazers began their unbeaten run during its three-game road swing, which began on September 2 at Georgia State. In its most recent outing, UAB came back from 1-0 down with 10 minutes to play to steal a 2-1 victory over North Alabama courtesy of two penalty kick goals from sophomore Kamilah Mustafa.
Mustafa has been the offensive catalyst for the Green and Gold this season as she leads the team with 10 points and five goals, two of which were game winners. Fellow forward Jamiera Lunsford has notched the team's other two goals on the year and leads UAB with 10 shots.
Between the pipes, goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty continues impress with 45 saves and two cleans sheets on the year. Her save total is currently the second most in C-USA and is tied for 19th in the NCAA.
Louisiana Tech (7-2-0) enters Sunday's contest with one of the best records in the league, powered by a six-match winning streak in the early stages of its non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs are coming off a tough match at Mississippi State, which they dropped 3-0.
Senior Mylene Roy-Ouellet has been the Lady Techsters' biggest weapon this year, leading the team in shots (20) and points (14). She is also tied with Kaylee Zettler in goals scored this season with five.
The two programs will meet for the fifth time when they take the field on Sunday with Louisiana Tech leading the all-time series, 4-0. During last season's meeting, the Blazers gave the Bulldogs everything they had but ultimately fell, 1-0, on a goal in the 66th minute.
Live stats for the match will be provided through uabsports.com and can be found here, while the match will be streamed live on CUSA.tv.
