BIRIMINGHAM, Ala. – In continuation with the look at UAB's 2018 Hall of Fame class, this week highlights the storied career of the legendary "Voice of the Blazers", Gary Sanders.
Sanders was a long-time announcer for WAPI-AM and called basketball and football games for the Blazers from 1979 until his retirement from UAB in 2006.
Over his storied career, he called more than 1,000 UAB athletic events in 27 years with the Blazers, including NCAA Tournament wins over Kentucky in 1981 and 2004, UAB football's win over LSU in 2000 and the 1992 NCAA East Regional Final game between Duke and Kentucky when Christian Laettner's buzzer-beater gave Duke a 104-103 win.
Sanders' name is one of five that hangs in the rafters of Bartow Arena along with Wanda Hightower, Jerome Mincy, Oliver Robinson and Steve Mitchell.
The radio personality joins men's golfer Graeme McDowell, women's basketball player Jacque Nero and volleyball player Patti Schroder as members of the 2018 UAB Hall of Fame class.
These four inductees will be honored at the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame dinner on Nov. 2 at The Club in Birmingham and again the following day at halftime of UAB's football game against UTSA.
Tickets to the Hall of Fame dinner are on sale by clicking here. Individual tickets are $100 to the general public and $50 to former Blazer athletes. Larger groups who wish to sit together can purchase a table of eight for $800. For additional questions, call Blazer Boosters at 205-996-9969.
