BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bonds to support the $300 million BJCC stadium and renovation of the existing arena were priced and sold on Tuesday, clearing the way for the new 45,000 seat stadium and upgrades to the BJCC campus. The bond sale is scheduled to close Aug. 7.
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees unanimously approved the lease agreement between the UAB Department of Athletics and the BJCC that is set to begin during the 2021 football season. The stadium will be located in the Uptown district as part of this $300 million project being taken on by the BJCC to renovate the arena and build a state-of-the-art, open-air football facility.
"This is a major step forward for the stadium project and brings us one step closer to breaking ground," Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. "There are a lot of great things happening in and around Birmingham, and this new stadium will continue to help us grow. The stadium will make an immediate, positive impact for our city, and we are proud to be a part of it."
Fans interested in securing seats when the Blazers kickoff in the new downtown stadium are strongly encouraged to commit to season tickets for the 2018 season and become members of Blazer Boosters. Build priority now as plans for the new stadium will continue to be unveiled in the coming months, but both seating and parking options for UAB Football games will continue to be allocated based on the Blazer Boosters Priority Points System.
The Blazer Booster Priority Points System is used to rank members for benefit allocation including season ticket location, parking assignments, individual game tickets and post-season events, among other things. Priority points are accumulated for lifetime giving, current year giving, purchasing season tickets for consecutive years and being an active member of Blazer Boosters for consecutive years. Points are accumulated and cannot be lost unless a patron does not invest in Blazer Boosters or purchase season tickets in a given year.
