Blackwood Tabbed Second-Team All-Conference

IRVING, Texas – Designated hitter Brett Blackwood of the UAB baseball team has been named Second-Team All-Conference USA as announced by the league office on Monday.
Blackwood is the first UAB designated hitter to garner all-conference honors since Digger Towe in 2009.
"I love Brett and am so proud of him," head coach Brian Shoop said. "What a story he is. He had double patella debridement – painful procedure in both of his knees. I remember times when Brett would literally almost fall down just walking the pain was so bad in his knees. This was a kid who led all of Alabama High School baseball in hits during his senior year. He has hung in there and rehabbed and fought to get back to where he could hit again.
He is not to the point where he can play a position, but he has served as our primary DH this year and he has helped our team in many ways. My favorite on the field moments this year are his three-run home run vs. Alabama at Regions Field and his three-run home run at Charlotte to put us ahead 4-3."
Blackwood ranks second on the team in batting average at .277 with 44 hits, six doubles, six home run and 25 RBI. He is tied for the team lead in home runs and is the only Blazer with multiple home runs in a game this season.
The all-conference award comes a day after Blackwood and Carter Pharis were named to the C-USA All-Academic Team.
"Brett is an amazing young man, he is a great student and he has been a joy to coach," Shoop said. "We are all happy for him and so proud of him."
