BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnston III threw for 130 yards and added 75 yards on the ground and a score to lead green past gold 14-13 during Saturday's Pepsi Spring Game at Legion Field.
Green erased a 10-point first half deficit for the victory and did most of its damage on the ground as Johnston's backfield mate James Noble III chipped in with 14 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, green was led by linebacker Craig Kanyangarara who had five tackles, two sacks and three TFL. Fellow linebacker Chris Woolbright had a team-high six stops, while Stacy Keely (who moved to Jack linebacker this spring) added four tackles, a sack and two pass breakups.
"Anytime you can come out of a spring game with no injuries it's a good day," said head coach Bill Clark. "It was probably a little colder than we thought but our guys handled it and competed really well. I am really pleased, I thought we had a really good spring. The effort was good, we have a lot of work to do this summer, but today was the culmination of a good spring.
"I really want to say how much I appreciate our fans coming out today in some tough conditions and supporting these guys. It was also good to see some of our former players come out today and support our players."
Gold was paced offensively by A.J. Erdely who threw for 135 yards and a touchdown (13-yarder to Collin Lisa), while running back Kingston Davis ran the ball 10 times for 71 yards and added two catches for 46 yards.
Thomas Johnston led the gold defense with seven tackles, while Kristopher Moll had six stops, a sack and a forced fumble. Defensive end Jamell Garcia-Williams was also an impact player with six tackles, a TFL and two quarterback hurries.
Gold jump out to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter when Erdely found Lisa in the corner of the end zone for the game's first touchdown.
Green would score late in the first half when Noble III ran it in from two yards out to make the score 10-7 at the half on favor of gold.
The second play of the second half was a 79-yard completion from Johnston III to Sederian Copeland which brought green down to the 1-yard line and Johnston III capped off the drive with a QB sneak, giving green a 14-10 advantage.
Nick Vogel, who was 2-of-3 on the day, connected on a field midway through the fourth quarter to make the score 14-13, but green was able to ice the game by converting on third down with less than two minutes to go.
The Blazers now turn their attention to summer conditioning as they start preparation for the 2018 campaign which begins Thursday, Aug. 30 against Savannah State at Legion Field. Season tickets are on sale by clicking here or calling 205-975-UAB1.
