ATLANTA – The UAB women's basketball team put everything on the line for 40 minutes but could not overcome a 59-percent shooting performance by the Georgia Tech offense as the Blazers fell to the Jackets, 91-47, in the Second Round of the WNIT.
UAB (27-7, 13-3) closed out its historic season with a program-best 27 wins overall and 13 wins in conference play, while setting numerous school records, including the most 3-pointers in a season (267), the highest single-season 3-point field goal percentage (37.6) and the most assists in a season (590).
The Blazers also claimed their first Conference USA Regular Season title in program history, advanced to their first C-USA Tournament title game since 2010 and earned their first postseason win since 2011 during their historic year.
"Georgia Tech was outstanding today, so give them all the credit," head coach Randy Norton said. "I love this team and how I feel about them is not based on winning and losing. It's unconditional. I am so proud of everything this team accomplished in this historic season and we will not let this take anything away from everything we accomplished this season. Our senior class was our first four-year class and they are leaving with the first ever C-USA Championship and have and will be graduating while excelling in the classroom."
Junior Deanna Kuzmanic was the Blazers' leading scorer on Sunday, finishing the game with 11 points along with two rebounds and two assists. In her final game in the Green and Gold, senior Kara Rawls was the only other Blazer in double figures with 10 points in addition to five rebounds.
Miyah Barnes finished the game with six points, while Rachael Childress added five of her own. Off the bench, Katelynn Thomas scored nine points for the Blazers.
The Jackets (20-13, 6-10) swarmed out of the gate, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. UAB kept the game close early as two free throws from Barnes kept the Georgia Tech advantage within two possessions at 18-12. However, the home side's hot shooting began to take its toll as the Jackets finished the first half on a 40-15 run to take a 58-27 lead at halftime.
UAB held firm for the first five minutes of the third period, holding Georgia Tech to five points over that span. The tough defensive effort was not enough, though, as the Jackets finished the third quarter on a 16-4 run to go up 80-40 with the fourth quarter left to play.
Facing a tall order in the final 10 minutes, UAB never backed down and held its opponent to their lowest scoring output of the game before falling 91-47.
UAB has a lot to look forward to heading into the 2018-19 season, returning 10 of its 13 players from this year's roster, including four starters. The team also welcomes in four newcomers that will look to make an immediate impact.
