BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In its only home tournament of the 2018 season, the UAB beach volleyball team is set to host the Blazer Beach Duals this weekend, March 16-17, at the West Campus Athletic Complex.
The Blazers welcome Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Louisiana Monroe, Mercer and No. 17 Tulane. Admission to the tournament is free and open to the public.
UAB will be in action on Friday morning, March 16 at 8 a.m., before returning on Saturday to play Mercer at 10 a.m. and Tulane at 2 p.m.
"We're excited to get back to competition after a week off since our last tournament," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "This is a highly competitive tournament and we are eager to see the improvements we've made since the last time we were in the sand."
The Blazers opened the season by going 3-1 at the New Orleans Invitational and notched victories over Jacksonville State, Spring Hill and the host Privateers. Seven of UAB's 11 player who saw action notched three victories, while SalliAnne Napolitano finished a perfect 3-0 with all of her wins coming on court five.
UAB will be playing its three most familiar opponents in program history this weekend, which includes Mercer who is the most common opponent for the Blazers as the two schools will meet for the 18th time when they take the court on Saturday. Mercer leads the all-time series by one match, 9-8.
The Blazers and ULM are deadlocked at 4-4 in the all-times series, while Tulane holds a 9-4 advantage over UAB. With a win over Tulane this weekend, it would mark the Blazers' first-ever victory over a ranked opponent and their first regular season CCSA victory.
There is bleacher seating at Blazer Beach, but fans are encouraged to bring additional lawn chairs. Concessions are available and fans are not allowed to bring their own food or pets inside the venue.
