BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB football head coach Bill Clark has announced Nick Gentry as the 10th assistant coach. Gentry's main responsibility will be working with the outside linebackers.
"Nick is an excellent fit for our program and for the players he will be coaching," Clark said. "He brings championship experience as a player and a coach and is going to be a major asset for UAB football."
Gentry, who played for Clark in high school at Prattville, went on to win two national championships as a defensive lineman at the University of Alabama in 2009 and 2011. In 2011, he was named Alabama's Co-Defensive MVP with Courtney Upshaw and helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national championship victory over LSU in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Upon graduation, Gentry's coaching career began as a defensive analyst at the University of Tennessee in 2012 where he worked primarily with defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri.
After one year at Tennessee, Gentry joined Clark's staff at Jacksonville State in 2013 as a graduate assistant on the defensive line and helped guide the Gamecocks to an 11-4 overall record and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.
Gentry was then promoted to a full-time assistant in 2014 coaching outside linebackers and defensive ends. He would coach there through 2017 and helped lead the Gamecocks to a national championship appearance versus North Dakota State while coaching three time All-American and Buck Buchanan award winner Darius Jackson.
He also coached two-time All-American Chris Landrum as well as Academic All-Americans Joseph Roberts and Dalton Campbell while at JSU.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to be coaching here at UAB and am excited to work with a great staff and a group of hungry players who are driven to win championships," Gentry said. "The success this program had in its first year back was truly remarkable and I am motivated to help elevate the expectations as a national contender year-in and year out."
Gentry is married to the former Magen Mathis and they have one son Brennan.
