UAB Set to Host the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships
2/16/2018 9:30:00 AM | Women's Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team is set to host the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Feb. 17-18.
The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. on both days with the heptathlon 60-meter dash leading off on Saturday and the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles kicking things off on Sunday.
It will be the seventh-consecutive year the conference meet will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
From the Coach's Desk
"Getting to host the conference meet is very special and it is something we look forward to every year," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Getting to have it at the CrossPlex where we compete throughout the indoor season helps give us a bit of home field advantage and helps to relax the team as it's a venue they are used to running at.
"Marielle Lewis has a great chance to score in the 800-meter run and freshman Taylor Jones also has a great chance to score in the 200-meter dash as well as some of our mile runners who have really stepped up could score some points this weekend."
What to Watch For
The Distance Medley Relay has historically been among the best in the conference and will again be looking to get on the podium this weekend.
Two weeks ago, Serena Martinez set the school record in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:56.79 and will be looking to better that time and get on the podium at the conference meet.
Bethan Evans broke the freshman record in the 1,000 two weeks ago in Boston running a 2:56.88 and finished fourth overall last weekend at the Samford Invite in the mile.
In the last two meets leading into the weekend, UAB athletes have set 18 new PRs.

The morning and evening sessions will be live streamed on C-USA TV on Saturday, Feb. 17 while on Sunday, Feb. 18th ESPN3 will broadcast the meet beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
