BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football team will make its 2018 debut two days earlier than originally scheduled as the Blazers' season-opening contest against Savannah State has been moved to Thursday night, Aug. 30, Director of Athletics Mark Ingram and Head Coach Bill Clark announced.
The game, which was originally slated to be played on Saturday, Sept. 1, will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The time of the game will be announced at a later date.
"Having a Thursday night season opener will provide an electric atmosphere for our players and we are excited to showcase our team to Birmingham two days earlier," Clark said. "Our goal is to always protect our home field and we want to pick up right where we left off in 2017."
UAB is 2-1 in season-opening home games in the month of August, with the last game being a 48-10 victory over Troy to kick off the 2014 season. The Blazers have won their last two home openers, including last season's historic 38-7 victory over Alabama A&M on Sept. 2.
"We want to give our team and fans the unique opportunity to kick off the college football season by playing on Thursday night," Ingram said. "Our fans were so instrumental in making the return of UAB football such a success in 2017, and we look forward to maintaining our unprecedented momentum during the 2018 season."
The Blazers are coming off their best season in program history in which they set a school record for FBS wins (8), Conference USA wins (6) and went 6-0 at home for the first time ever. UAB also led Conference USA in attendance with an average of 26,375 fans per game.
UAB looks to continue the momentum that it built last season as it returns 17 starters for the 2018 season, including a back field highlighted by a record-setting duo in quarterback A.J. Erdely and Freshman All-American Spencer Brown.
The team also welcomes in a plethora of new talent as part of the 2017 early signing period and the upcoming National Signing Day. Fans will have the opportunity to celebrate the 2018 class along with Coach Clark and other UAB coaches at the 2018 NLI Signing Day Event which is set for Feb. 7 at Iron City. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free and open to the public.
