BIRMINGHAM – For the second year in a row, CBS Sports has named UAB head coach Bill Clark its National Coach of the Year, the outlet announced on Wednesday. Clark wins the award following another record setting season in Birmingham that saw the Blazers capture their first Conference USA title.
Last year, Clark was the first Group of Five coach to win the award, and he is now the first coach to repeat as CBS Sports' National Coach of the Year.
As the CBS Sports article indicates, Clark won Coach of the Year "with an overwhelming majority of our vote."
In 2018, the Blazers claimed their first-ever Conference USA Championship en route to the program's first 10-win season which included a school record seven C-USA victories. UAB landed 14 players on C-USA postseason awards teams and is poised to set virtually every offensive and defensive school record.
Since UAB returned to the field in 2017, Clark has led the Blazers to an 18-8 overall record and a mark of 14-3 in conference play (including the title game). The 18 total wins are the most in a two-year span in school history, while the 14 league wins are the most of any team in Conference USA.
Of those 18 wins, 12 have come at home and the Blazers are 12-0 at Legion Field since the reinstatement, the fifth longest home winning streak in the nation.
UAB will play in the school's third bowl game on December 18 against Northern Illinois at the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. UAB has been bowl eligible six times in program history and all three seasons under Clark's guidance.
In three seasons with the Blazers, Clark has compiled a record of 24-14 and is 35-18 overall as a Division I head coach.
Clark's 2018 Awards List:
CBS Sports National Coach of the Year
Sporting News National Coach of the Year
Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Finalist (FWAA)
George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Finalist (Maxwell Football Club)
