UAB Hosts Appalachian State to Begin 2018-19 Season

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team begins its 40th season when it opens the regular season on Friday night against Appalachian State. Tipoff between the Blazers and Mountaineers is set for 6 p.m. from Bartow Arena.
UAB went undefeated in exhibition play, defeating Miles College 95-53 and Young Harris 101-37. The Blazers had four players net double figures in both contests as Rachael Childress finished with 17 points against the Golden Bears and Deanna Kuzmanic netted a game-high 18 points against the Mountain Lions.
Childress and Kuzmanic were named to the Conference USA Preseason Team after both were First Team All-C-USA selections a season ago. The duo led UAB in scoring during the Blazers' historic season in which they won the first C-USA Regular Season Championship in program history.
This season, UAB was picked to finish first in the preseason C-USA polls. The Blazers received eight of the 14 first place votes as this marked the first time in program history that UAB enters the season as the league favorite since the conference began keeping records in 2005.
Appalachian State returns all 10 of its active players from the 2017-18 season, including the Sun Belt's leading rebounder in Bayley Plummer. Also back for the Mountaineers is Pre Stanley and Tierra Wilson who were the first App State freshmen to lead the team in scoring since 2009-10.
The Mountaineers placed three players on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team in Plummer and Stanley along with Madi Story who is back this season after missing all of last year with a torn ACL.
Friday night marks just the second meeting between UAB and App State as the Blazers took the first ever meeting 70-59 in Boone, N.C., last December.
Tickets to the game can be purchased online at the Bartow Arena Ticket Office. Tickets are $5 for adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger.
Women's basketball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2018-19 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home volleyball, baseball and softball games in addition to all 14 women's basketball home contests. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
