BIRMINGHAM – A quartet of Blazers from the UAB men's soccer team have earned Conference USA Postseason Team honors, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Defenders Mathieu Laurent and Gael Mabiala, along with midfielder Eder Mora, landed a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team, while midfielder Blake White earned All-Freshman Team accolades.
"I am very pleased for all of these guys," head coach Mike Getman said. "They are great players and great leaders. It is good to know that other coaches in the league see it too."
No. 2 Gael Mabiala | Senior | Saint Etienne, France
Mabiala has started 15 of the 17 matches he has played in in his final season on the Southside. Entering his senior year with no career points, he leads the team in assists with four and added a goal for six total points on the season. The Francis Marion transfer pitched in on two assists at Florida Atlantic on Oct. 13, while netting his first career goal against Fairleigh Dickinson on Aug. 31 in the "Soccer for a Cure" Classic. The Second-Team Honor is the first postseason award of his career.
No. 11 Eder Mora | Redshirt Junior | Dalton, Ga.
One of just two players on the team to start all 17 games this season, Mora has played an instrumental role in the team's success on both sides of the ball. Defensively, he helped UAB pitch consecutive shutouts and go unbeaten in four consecutive games for the first time since 2014. Offensively, he netted the golden goal on a penalty kick in double overtime at Santa Clara to lift UAB to its first victory of the year, while adding a pair of assists this season. The team captain was also named to the C-USA All-Academic Team on Monday.
No. 15 Mathieu Laurent | Redshirt Senior | Markham, Ontario
Laurent was named to the Preseason All-C-USA Team before the captain followed the honor with aiding the UAB defense in pitching consecutive shutouts and going unbeaten in four consecutive matches for the first time since 2014. On the season, he contributed to three shutouts, while starting all 14 matches that he played in. Wrapping up his final season for the Blazers, he has earned postseason honors all four years, including consecutive C-USA Second Team Honors.
No. 17 Blake White | Freshman | Atlanta, Ga.
The freshman has made an immediate impact since stepping on campus as he leads the squad in goals with five. The Atlanta native recorded his first career multi-goal game in the Blazers' 4-0 win over Georgia State on Nov. 3, while he found the back of the net at Lipscomb and at home against New Mexico and Georgia Southern. White is the 23rd Blazer to earn C-USA All-Freshman Team Honors and the first since Mora garnered the award in 2016.
UAB returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it faces Charlotte in the C-USA Tournament. Kickoff between the Blazers and 49ers is set for 6 p.m. CST from Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C.
