BIRMINGHAM – The unbeaten UAB women's basketball team faces its first road test of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Chicago State. Tipoff between the Blazers and Cougars is slated for 12 p.m. from the Jones Convocation Center.
At 2-0, the Blazers sit at the top of the Conference USA rankings and are the only unbeaten team in the league. The Blazers have won their two games by an average of 25 points per game, the highest scoring margin in the league.
Defense has been a big reason for the Green and Gold's success as they have held opponents to just a 17.0 percent (8-of-47) mark from long range. That is good for the 12th best percentage in the NCAA and the second best in C-USA.
Also a reason for success is the ability to share the basketball as the Blazers rank 14th nationally, and first in the league, in assists with 14. Miyah Barnes, who is coming off a career-high 11 assist night against Memphis, ranks second in the nation in assists per game, averaging 8.0 per contest.
Deanna Kuzmanic leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game, while shooting 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the field. The senior leads C-USA and ranks 19th in the NCAA in field goal percentage.
Chicago State enters Tuesday's game winless at 0-4 on the season and is coming off a 104-68 loss at Morehead State on Sunday. However, the Cougars rank seventh nationally in blocked shot with 26 on the season as Ines Matia Box leads the squad with 13.
Tyeshia Bowers powers the Cougars' offense, averaging 23.0 points per game. The sophomore has netted double figures every game and ranks 15th in the NCAA in total points and 20th in points per game.
Tuesday marks the first meeting between UAB and Chicago State. The Cougars are one of just two team's that they Blazers will face this season that they have no prior history with.
With seven players on the roster from the Chicago area, Tuesday is a homecoming for much of the team. Tickets to the game can be purchased online or at the Jones Convocation Center Box Office for $10.
Women's basketball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2018-19 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home volleyball, baseball and softball games in addition to all 12 of women's basketball's remaining home contests.
