Johnston set career highs in passing attempts (39), completions (25) and yards (306), and led the UAB offense which compiled 417 total yards of offense. Spencer Brown added 80 rushing yards and a touchdown and moved into a tie for third place all-time in career rushing touchdowns with 25.
Andre Wilson led the receivers with seven catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Xavier Ubosi (81 yards) and Kailon Carter (78 yards) each added six catches.
Despite the impressive offensive numbers, UAB (9-2) had three costly turnovers and also left points on the board with three missed field goals.
The nation's leaders in sacks, UAB was held to just one tonight and had four tackles for loss. The defense was paced by Fitzgerald Mofor with seven stops, while Broderick Thomas had six tackles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
The game started off rocky for the Blazers as Wilson fumbled the opening kickoff which was returned 17 yards for a touchdown by Larry Pryor to give A&M a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game.
UAB responded on the ensuing drive by going 75 yards on 10 plays and capped it with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Johnston III to Wilson to even the game at 7-7 at the 11:15 mark.
The Aggies (7-4) went ahead 14-7 with 5:44 to go in the quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run by Trayveon Williams, his 12th of the season.
A 34-yard field goal early in the second and an additional 1-yard rushing touchdown from Williams with :40 remaining in the half gave the Aggies a 24-7 lead at halftime.
The Blazers moved the ball on the Aggies in the first half and ultimately outgained Texas A&M 217-181 in the first two quarters.
Texas A&M tallied the only 10 points of the third quarter for a 34-7 lead after three, but UAB outscored the Aggies 13-7 in the final stanza which ultimately made the final score 41-20.
UAB was impressive on third down, converting 10-of-16 for the game, and holding A&M to just 3-of-8. UAB also had the edge in time of possession (34:11-25:49).
Williams, who is the SEC's leading rusher, finished the game with 20 carries for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Kellen Mond was 11-of-20 for 192 yards and two touchdowns, and his top target was Jace Sternberger who had four catches for 85 yards and two scores.
The Blazers conclude the regular season next Saturday at Middle Tennessee with a chance to clinch home field advantage for the Conference USA Championship Game. Kickoff in Murfreesboro is at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
