Blazers Close Homestand With the Battle For the Bones

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team closes its two game homestand on Thursday night when it welcomes Memphis to Bartow Arena. The Battle of the Bones rivalry tips off at 6 p.m.
UAB (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) opened the season with an 80-61 win over Appalachian State on Nov. 9. Miyah Barnes led the Blazers with 19 points and five assists. Barnes currently ranks fifth overall in Conference USA scoring.
Deanna Kuzmanic chipped in 17 points in the win over the Mountaineers, while also reeling in a career-best eight rebounds. The senior's 17 points moved her into 22nd all-time in program history in scoring.
Memphis (1-1, 0-0 American) comes to Birmingham to close its two-game road stint after dropping the opening game at Arkansas State 77-66 in Jonesboro. The Tigers are allowing 72.0 points per game, while only averaging 67.0 per contest.
Freshman Jamirah Shutes leads the Memphis offense with 19.0 points per contest. She dropped 19 points in her collegiate debut against Jackson State and then followed that performance with an 18-point night against the Red Wolves.
The UAB vs. Memphis rivalry dates back to 1980 as the Tigers lead the all-time series 33-21, including taking last season's game at Memphis 64-62. UAB does hold a slight 11-10 advantage against Memphis when the two teams have battled in Birmingham.
Thursday night will be an actual Battle of the Bones as various UAB student organizations will all be competing to win the best sauce on campus in a pregame contest beginning on the concourse at 5 p.m. The winner will be announced at halftime.
Tickets are available to the game at the Bartow Arena Ticket Office or online and are $5 fo adults or $3 for kids 18 and younger.
Women's basketball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2018-19 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card includes access to home volleyball, baseball and softball games in addition to all 13 women's basketball home contests. Contact the UAB Ticket Office, (205) 975-UAB1, for more details.
