Simpson Signs With UAB Baseball

BIRMINGHAM – UAB baseball head coach Brian Shoop has announced the signing of shortstop Chandler Simpson as the first signee of the 2019 signing class.
Simpson hails from Atlanta, Ga., and plays high school baseball at St. Pius X.

Simpson played his high school baseball for Coach Chad Garrison at St. Pius X, where he led the Golden Lions' offense as a junior hitting .401 with 41 hits and 24 stolen bases en route to earning Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-County and All-Region honors. As a sophomore he earned Honorable Mention Class AAAA All-County and All-Region honors, also earning the Newcomer of the Year Award in 2017.
Simpson played summer baseball for the Georgia Bombers under coaches Wes Rynders and Rich Gains where he was a 2017 Perfect Game All-Tournament team honoree and a Top 100 performer at the WWBA World Championships where he earned All-Tournament honors after leading an elite field in stolen bases.

"I remain convinced that for mid-major to compete at a national level you have to pitch well and defend the field at a high level. Chandler is a premium defender who our pitchers will love having him play behind them. They do not keep a statistic called Runs Saved, but they are real and count just as much as Runs Batted In and Chandler will have the ability to save a lot of runs from scoring during his years at UAB.
Chandler is also a plus runner who will be exciting on the base paths and he will also add another left handed bat to our lineup. He is obviously a great student athlete who will fit right in and will excel in the classroom at UAB. His parents are both educators and have instilled in him the importance of excellence in the classroom. For every reason, Chandler is a great match for UAB baseball and we are thrilled to add him to our baseball family."
