10/26/2018 11:21:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM – Trailing two sets to none and facing a possible sweep, the UAB volleyball team stormed back against Louisiana Tech to claim a five-set victory (26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 17-15) on Friday night inside Bartow Arena.
Abby Carlile broke out against the Lady Techsters as she paced the Blazer offense with her first double-double of the year while setting career highs in kills (22) and digs (13). Keeping pace with her was Emma Mitchell who scored her seventh double-double of the season. Mitchell set career highs in kills with 19 and digs with 22.
Joining them on the career high train was sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield. She recorded 63 assists against LA Tech, breaking her previous career high of 60 set last season. Holderfield netted six kills on the night which is a new career high as well.
Victoria Young played a key role in the middle with 11 kills and two blocks on the night, hitting at .310 percent. On the outside, Alex Kells picked up 13 kills and a career high 17 digs while getting two service aces and two blocks.
Along the back line, freshman libero Brianna Muller keep the offense on track all night with 18 digs, one shy of tying her career high.
"Even in the first two sets when we lost we were doing the right things," head coach Amy Pauly said. "We were still performing and you see that in the stats. I am proud of how they sustained it through a whole match and never got down. I credit Shelby a lot, 63 assists is a really high number, she distributed the ball very well to the pins and they capitalized on it. Alex had another lights out performance for us and dug herself out of a hole early on. She was key for us in those final three sets while Brianna's defense kept us in the game during the long rallies and allowed our offense to continue to attack."
