Blazers Wrap Up Play at ITA Southern Regional

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team completed play at the ITA Southern Regional on Saturday, taking home five victories over the course of the event.
The Blazers saw their first victory during the singles qualifying rounds on Thursday. Junior Giovani Pasini defeated Sam Fischer (Alabama), 6-3,6-1, while fellow junior Fernando Vargas advanced to the second round over Gregor Ramskogler (Mississippi State) via a walkover.
In singles consolation play, the Green and Gold notched several impressive wins. Freshman Daniel Janko defeated Kacper Dworak (Louisiana), 6-2, 7-6 on Thursday and Alex Rushin (Auburn), 6-3, 6-4 on Friday morning. Pasini conquered Max Rebol (Samford), 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) on the indoor courts at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
The Blazer doubles team of Pasini and Vargas received a first-round bye and advanced to the round of 16 after defeating LSU's Shane Monroe and Agie Moreno in the second round, 8-6, on Saturday morning before falling to South Alabama's Lois Cloes and Clement Marzol, 8-3.
UAB returns to the courts for an ITF Futures event at Birmingham's Highland Park Tennis Center from Oct. 29-31 prior to taking part in the Birmingham Country Club Invitational from Nov. 2-4.
