BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Riding the momentum of one of the best non-conference seasons in program history, the UAB women's basketball team hits the road to open Conference USA play as it takes on Old Dominion at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The Blazers enter their conference slate at 11-2, their best start since starting 12-2 in the 1994-95 season, and are riding a four-game winning streak including its most recent 105-50 victory over Tuskegee.
"Our team is really looking forward to opening up Conference USA play on Thursday," head coach Randy Norton said. "We had a tremendous non-conference season and I know it has prepared our girls for the challenges they will face in conference play. Opening on the road is always tough, but we are confident our team will be ready to go and play to the best of our ability."
UAB's win over Tuskegee provided fans with plenty of memorable moments as the Green and Gold scored over 100 points for just the 13th time in program history and the second time under Norton. The team also broke the single game assist record with its 34 assists, topping the previous record of 32 set against Alabama State on Feb. 3, 1981.
Junior Deanna Kuzmanic led the charge for the Blazers' offense against the Golden Tigers, scoring a career-high 25 points to pace five players in double figures.
The offense produced by the Blazers this year has been extremely efficient, especially from behind the arc. Through 13 games, UAB is shooting 41.6 percent from 3-point range, the best in C-USA and third-best in the nation.
Rachael Childress has been the catalyst from deep as she leads the league in made 3-pointers (44) and 3-point field goal percentage (46.8 percent).
The team's unselfish attitude has also played a huge role as UAB continues to lead the league in assists (18.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.4). Sophomore Miyah Barnes leads the team with 54 assists on the year and is tied for the second-best assist/turnover ratio in conference at 2.5. Kuzmanic leads the league in that category with an impressive 2.8 assist/turnover ratio.
Old Dominion (2-11, 0-0) is coming off its second win of the season as the Monarchs took down South Carolina State, 52-35. The team was led by double-double efforts from both Taylor Edwards (10/15) and Odegua Oigbokie (13/13).
The Monarchs are led by freshman Victoria Morris, who is averaging 12.2 points per contest. Oigbokie is the only other Monarch averaging in double figures this season, pouring 11.7 points per game while hauling in a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game.
Old Dominion leads the all-time series over UAB, 13-4, and won the previous meeting between the two programs on Feb. 11, 2017, 73-61. However, the Blazers have found success against the Monarchs under Norton as the team has won two out of the last four contests.
Fans not able to attend Thursday's game will be able to catch all the action on national television as the game is being broadcast on beIN Sports. Doug Ripley (PxP) and Susan Montgomery (color) will be on the call.
