BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Due to Hurricane Irma, the UAB Department of Athletics, the city of Birmingham and its community will welcome Conference USA partner FIU to the Magic City for its football game vs. Alcorn State.
FIU and Alcorn State, which was scheduled for Sept. 9 in Miami, will be played at Legion Field on Friday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. Further details on the game will be sent out in the near future.
The Panthers have decided to relocate a number of their teams to Birmingham to avoid Hurricane Irma.
"We reached out to FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia to offer Legion Field and our city, but also to help keep everyone safe," said Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. "The Mayor's Office, the Birmingham Parks and Recreation Board and the entire city of Birmingham was very quick to react and that's not surprising. We are going to support FIU, Alcorn State and everyone affected by Hurricane Irma throughout this process."
"We have decided to relocate a number of our teams to Birmingham, Alabama," said FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia. "I want to thank UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Birmingham community for their tremendous help and assistance. The UAB family has gone above-and-beyond to make us feel welcome."
