BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram has announced that the Blazers will host Georgia Southern vs. New Hampshire at Legion Field on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Georgia Southern, but due to the trajectory of Hurricane Irma, GSU and UNH have agreed to play the game in Birmingham.
There will now be two games at Legion Field this weekend, along with FIU playing Alcorn State on Friday night at 6 p.m. Admission to both games is free.
"This is about people helping people," Ingram said. "We want everyone to be as safe as possible and extending the offer to play at Legion Field is in the best interest of both teams. The UAB Department of Athletics has benefitted from the help of thousands of people over the last few years so this is just one small way to pay it back."
"When looking at the possibilities where we could try and play this football game, UAB and Director of Athletics Mark Ingram reached out to us and offered us their facilities," Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein said. "After reviewing the updated forecast, we believe the best option for ensuring this game being played is to move to Birmingham. With the developing weather situation, it was paramount to make a decision today so that we would not have to pull resources that may be used in an evacuation scenario.
"I want to thank Mark Ingram, the city of Birmingham and everyone involved in helping make this move possible. This couldn't have been done without the flexibility of the University of New Hampshire and our staff."
The UAB football team is on the road for week two with a contest at Ball State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CST.
