BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Coming off a two-win weekend at the Dale Short Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the UAB men's tennis team hits to road once again this weekend as the team travels to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to take part in the Southern Miss Invitational.
Singles action for both days of competition begins at 10 a.m. CT. Doubles play on Friday is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start with Saturday's doubles competitions beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
Sophomore Tim Dollman and junior Stefan Gonzalez will be in action at the end of the weekend as the duo will represent the Blazers in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the ITA All-American Championships.
"We are happy that Dollman and Gonzalez were selected to play in the prestigious ITA All-American tournament," head coach Derek Tarr said. "I am hoping they can continue their good form from last weekend. The Southern Miss Invitational will give all of our players a chance to prove themselves in a team event. Some of the players will have to step up and play higher in the lineup."
UAB is looking to carry the momentum from a successful opening weekend of fall play as the Blazers downed Austin Peay (5-2) and Lipscomb (6-1) to claim its first two victories of the 2017 season. The team's lone setback of the weekend was a 4-3 result to Conference USA-foe Middle Tennessee.
Over the course of the opening weekend, the Green and Gold compiled a 13-6 singles record and a 7-2 doubles record.
The team was led by Dollman, who went 3-0 in singles play in straight sets and won all three of his doubles matches with Gonzalez. Gonzalez finished the weekend 2-1 in singles play. Kenton Parton was the only other Blazer to go a perfect 3-0 in singles action to help the Blazers go 2-1 over the weekend.
The Blazers are competing in a fall tournament hosted by Southern Miss for the third-straight season. At last season's tournament, the Blazers boasted a 14-4 mark in singles play and a 7-2 record in doubles and were led by Eric Komati and Christian Coetzee, who secured nine wins for the Green and Gold as the duo were perfect in singles with three wins while also combining for three wins as UAB's top doubles tandem.
