Blazers Claim Two Victories at Dale Short Shootout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's tennis team opened its fall season in fine fashion as the Blazers recorded two victories at the Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

UAB defeated Austin Peay 5-2 on Friday before earning its second victory of the weekend on Sunday against Lipscomb, 6-1. The Blazers battled with hosts Middle Tennessee on Saturday, but ended up falling to the Blue Raiders 4-3.

"Overall, I thought we had a positive start to the fall season," head coach Derek Tarr said. "We finished the weekend strong, winning five of the six singles and two of the three doubles against Lipscomb on Sunday. I am proud of how we swept the doubles matches versus Middle Tennessee. Individually, Tim Dollman went undefeated in all of his matches."

The Blazers dropped the doubles point in its opening match against Austin Peay on Friday, but the Blazers responded well by winning five of the six singles matches that were contested to secure the 5-2 victory.

UAB found itself in a tough fight with conference foe Middle Tennessee on Saturday. The Green and Gold were impressive in doubles play, taking all three matches to take an early 1-0 lead overall.

Dollman and Kenton Parton each won their singles matches to extend the Blazer lead to 3-0, but four straight wins by the Middle Tennessee secured the 4-3 victory for the home team.

In the final match of the weekend, the Blazers once against jumped out to a quick start after winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. UAB did not let up in singles play, taking five of six matches for the second time over the weekend against Lipscomb.

Individually, Dollman led the charge for the team after going 3-0 in singles in straight sets and winning all three of his doubles matches with partner Stefan Gonzalez. Gonzalez finished the weekend 2-1 in singles play.

Parton was the only other Blazer to go a perfect 3-0 in singles action to help the Blazers go 2-1 over the weekend.

UAB returns to action on September 29 when the team travels to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to compete in the Southern Miss Invitational.
