MOBILE, Ala. – The UAB women's golf is off to a hot start as it sits in a tie for first place after day one of the USA Intercollegiate. The Blazers fired an even par 288 to set the school for lowest team 18-hole score.
"I am pleased with our initial round of the year," head coach Kim Wilcox said.
Sophomore Maria Donado shot a career round of 69 (-3) to sit in sole possession of first place. The Columbia native rattled off four birdies with her long bogey coming on the 18th hole.
Sydney Snodgrass continued her strong play from a season ago with a one under 71 on her first 18. Three birdies has her sitting in a tie for third place going into the second round.
The strong play continued down the line as Juliana Sebastian carded an even par 72 and is tied for seventh. Kenna Hughes is tied for 30th after shooting a four-over (76). Imy Huxley rounded out the UAB lineup after an opening round 81.
"Maria had a breakout round which is exciting. Sydney and Juliana showed their experience with great scores as well. Kenna had a good round Imy started slow but found her game on the final nine," Wilcox said.
UAB is tied with South Alabama with Tulane on each team's heels in third place at two-over. The Blazers tee off at 9:40 tomorrow morning and will be paired with Alabama State and Troy.
"Now we mentally prepare tomorrow and we will take it one shot at a time," Wilcox continued. "We know we can shoot low."
