UAB Gets Win Number One Of 2017

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB volleyball downs Georgia State 3-1, (27-29, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-16) to claim its first victory of the 2017 season.

The Blazers (1-3) dropped a back and forth first set 29-27. It looked like more of the same from the Boston College Tournament as UAB jumped out to an early lead only to have the Panthers (1-3) claw their way back into the set.
UAB got the first set to match point but Georgia State fought it off and tied it at 24 and the teams went back and forth until the Panthers finally took the opening set 29-27.
In the second set, UAB fell behind by two points early but quickly stormed back and captured the lead. Georgia State kept it close but the Blazers were in control all the way to a 25-22 set two win.
Georgia State raced out to a 5-0 lead in the third set but following a UAB timeout, the Blazers rattled off four straight points to close the gap. UAB continued to trail throughout most of the match but kept within reach of the Panthers and finally tied the score at 22 all. Three straight kills by Gabby Deshotel put the Blazers on top 25-22 in the third set.
The fourth and final set again saw the Blazers start slow but seven straight points by UAB including three service aces by Erika Zembyla had the home crowd rocking and carried the Blazers to a 25-16 set win and clinched their first win of the season.
Haley Jared led the Blazers with a double-double, 18 kills and 15 digs while Deshotel also earned a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs.
"Haley just does it all for us," assistant coach Jeff White said. "She gets kills and she gets down to make tough digs. She plays all over to court. When you have a player like that it makes everyone better."
Kenley Adams again led UAB with 51 assists. It is the third time in four games that the Florida native has hit or surpassed the 50-assist mark. Meanwhile, Emily Martinez led the way in digs with 21 with Kaylee
Gilchrist chipping in with 10 digs.
UAB will it the home court again Friday as it will play twice, the first match will be at 1 p.m. against Charleston Southern and the night cap will start at 7 p.m. against Austin Peay.
