BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two second half goals proved to be all the Blazers would need as the UAB men's soccer team defeated West Alabama 2-0 Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field.
"I thought it was a great game for us," head coach Mike Getman said. "West Alabama was very good. They sat back and defended and made the game hard for us. We scored a nice first goal but it was the kind of challenge that we needed in preseason."
UAB picked up its first goal just three minutes into the second half when Chandler Stroupe drilled a shot from roughly 10 yards outside of the box.
The game would remain in favor of UAB 1-0 until the final second when forward Aidan O'Hara picked up the Blazers second goal with 0:01 remaining on the clock to secure the 2-0 victory.
"The last 10-15 minutes I thought West Alabama did a great job of pushing forward and throwing every body and trying to get the goal to tie the game. Instead we caught them on a counter attack," Getman said.
West Alabama did manage to get off 10 shots with two coming from fellow Birmingham native Keegan McQueen.
James Teal played the entire 90-minutes for the Blazers in goal picking up six saves and was credited with the win.
"It was a great college soccer game, two good teams played well. For the end of preseason I think it was just what we needed," Getman said.
UAB closes the preseason at 1-1-0 and is set for its season opener on Friday, Aug. 25 against UNC Greensboro. The Blazers and Spartans are set to kick off at 7 P.M. at BBVA Compass Field.
