UAB Softball Opens Conference USA Tournament with WKU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to participate in the Conference USA Championship May 10-13. The Blazers will face WKU in the first round Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for noon.

THE SERIES
UAB leads the all-time series with a 5-4 record against the Hilltoppers. The two teams met earlier in the season where the Blazers won the series, 2-1, in Bowling, Green, Ky.
ON THE BLAZERS
The Blazers enter the tournament sitting in second place in the West Division with a 12-12 C-USA record.
Destini England, recently named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team, leads the Blazers with a .277 batting average, 48 hits, 25 runs and seven triples.
Mary Warren was this week’s C-USA Player of the Week coming off a stellar performance against Middle Tennessee and No. 23 Marshall. She is second on the squad with a .271 batting average and is slugging a team-high .490.
Claire Blount, also named to the C-USA All Freshman Team, leads the pitching staff in most categories. She owns a 2.82 ERA, has thrown 11 complete games, three shutouts, one save and has tallied 121 strikeouts in 153.2 innings of work.
SCOUTING WKU
Offensively, junior Jordan Mauch leads the Hilltoppers with a .304 batting average, 12 home runs, 48 hits and a .589 slugging percentage. She is second on the team with 29 RBI and has seen action in all 54 games WKU has played.
Brittney Vaughn has been strong offensively for WKU this season. The Bowling Green, Ky., native leads the squad with 31 RBI and has the second-most hits on the season with 45. She is the only player to start all 54 games and is slugging .497 on the year.
Kathryn Downing has been carrying the load for the Hilltoppers this season. She has a 15-12 record and boasts a 2.21 ERA. The senior owns a team-high 90 strikeouts and opposing batters are hitting .251 against her. She has tossed 13 complete games and has pitched five shutouts this season.
A LOOK AHEAD
If the Blazers defeat WKU in the first round of the tournament, they will play Florida Atlantic Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.
