UAB Softball Splits in Doubleheader with WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The UAB softball team split in the doubleheader with WKU Saturday at the WKU Softball Complex. The Blazers won the first game, 1-0, in nine innings and dropped the nightcap, 7-3.
UAB 1, WKU 0
Both teams were held scoreless through eight frames in the first game of the doubleheader with WKU.
Mary Warren broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth inning when she sent a solo-shot over the right field wall with two outs to give the Blazers the 1-0 lead and eventual win.
UAB (12-20, 4-3) outhit WKU 5-1, with the only Hilltopper hit coming in the eighth inning off the bat of Morgan McElroy.
Destini England led the way for the Blazers offensively with two hits in the game while Joanna Fallen, Analyse Petree and Mary Warren all contributed with one.
Cara Goodwin (1-7) celebrated the win in the circle for UAB. The veteran tossed the complete game, tallied six strikeouts and pitched a no-hitter through regulation; the only hit she gave up was in the eighth inning.
Kathryn Downing (11-6) suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers. She gave up one run on five hits in 8.2 innings of work in the loss to the Blazers and recorded eight strikeouts.
UAB 3, WKU 7
WKU took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The first run came off a UAB fielder’s interference, and the second run came when Jordan Mauch sent a solo-shot over the left field wall.
UAB (12-21, 4-4) cut into the Hilltoppers’ lead in the second when Destini England singled up the middle to score Amy Waters who reached on an infield hit.
The Hilltoppers extended their lead in the third inning when Adarian Gray sent a standup double to right-center to plate two runs.
WKU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first run came when Brittany Vaughn sent a double to right-center to score Taylor Proctor and the second run came off the bat of Paige Carter when she singled through the left side to plate Vaughn.
The fifth inning saw two more UAB runs when Fallen snuck a two-run homer inside the left field foul pole to shrink WKU’s lead to 6-3.
The Hilltoppers added a single run in the sixth inning when Carter got herself in a pickle between first and second and Vaughn took the opportunity to cross the plate and make the score 7-3.
Claire Blount (6-8) took the loss in the circle for UAB. She tossed the complete game and recorded eight strikeouts.
Kelsey Aikey (4-3) celebrated the win for the Hilltoppers. She gave up only two earned runs and tallied three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
The Blazers will be back in action Sunday as they play WKU in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
