BLUFFTON, S.C. - Junior R.J. Keur led four Blazers who finished in the top-15 as the UAB men’s golf team placed second overall at the Colleton River Intercollegiate at Dye Course.
Keur placed second overall and finished two over for the tournament, one shot behind Charlie Netzel of Michigan State who won the individual title at +1. It was Keur’s first top five finish as a Blazer and he now has two top-15 finishes in consecutive tournaments.
Also notching top-15 finishes included Tim Harry who tied for eighth overall at six over, and Taylor Eyster and William Walker who tied for 11th at nine over.
“I am really pleased with how the guys competed this week,” head coach Mike Wilson said. “R.J. placed second and had a great chance to win. We are really excited about where he is headed. Tim Harry had a chance to win down the stretch but a few tough breaks cost him. William Walker was a huge help to us today in very tough conditions and it was great to see him fight back after a rough first two rounds.
“Overall, it is disappointing to not win, but hats off to Michigan State for a very impressive round. Looking forward, we have a week off to practice and build on this tournament before heading to Statesboro, Georgia.”
Keur’s tournament consisted of a two under in the opening round, followed by consecutive two over 74s which landed him at +2 for the tournament.
Michigan State, who trailed UAB by two strokes entering Tuesday’s final round, rallied to win the tournament at +20, followed by the Blazers (+23), UConn (+33), Cincinnati (+34) and Rutgers (+43).
The Blazers return to the links March 17-19 at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
