TROY, Ala. - The UAB softball team tallied three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh inning to clinch the 3-2 win over Troy Tuesday night at the Troy Softball Complex.
"First of all, I think the pitchers came out and did an outstanding job to keep a good hitting team like Troy to only two runs," head coach Marla Townsend said. "I am extremely proud of the overall effort today. They were relentless and it speaks so highly of the character of these ladies."
Troy (15-16, 3-3) struck early and was on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Katie Webb singled to center field and plated Becca Hartley for the quick 1-0 lead.
The Trojans added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning off the bat Brooke Echols when she singled up the middle to plate Carli Kayler.
UAB's (11-17, 3-3) bats heated up in the top of the seventh. The Blazers recorded three runs on five hits in the inning.
Analyse Petree started things off with a single to left field. Rachel Dunsford followed her with a single to center field with one out.
Amy Waters had a hit up the middle to load the bases for the Blazers before freshman Natalie Erwin sent a stand-up double to right-center and drove in pinch runner Sophie Robic to tie the game at two.
Destini England was next to the plate and sent a single down the right field line to score Waters and to give the Blazers the 3-2 lead and eventual win.
Claire Blount (6-5) celebrated the win for the Blazers. She came in relief of Madison Hir, recorded five strikeouts, didn't let any runs score and only gave up one hit in three innings of work.
Rachel Rigney Brown (6-10) suffered the loss in the circle for the Trojans. She pitched 6.1 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out two batters.
UAB will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Oklahoma City, Okla., to participate in the College Preview Tournament.
