Blazers Strike Early to Defeat South Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team struck early in the first inning to set the pace for the 8-3 win over the South Alabama Jaguars Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
UAB (9-14, 2-1) got off to a fast start by plating six runs in the first inning to set the pace for the rest of the game for the Blazers.
Madison Millsaps singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Destini England for the quick 1-0 lead. Rachel Dunsford recorded her eighth hit of the season with a single to shallow center field to bring Danii Fernandez in for the score.
The third run of the inning came when Mary Warren took a bases loaded pitch off the leg for a free base and drove in Analyse Petree.
Lizzie Ryan was next to the plate and the Germantown, Tenn., native singled up the middle to record her first two RBI of the season and to make the score 5-0.
The final run of the inning came on a fielding error by the South Alabama first baseman to plate Natalie Erwin.
The Blazers scored their final two runs of the game in the second inning when Millsaps launched a two-run shot to center field for the 8-2 lead.
South Alabama (17-7, 0-3) plated two runs in the top of the second inning. The first run came when Aly Smith hit a hard infield single to short stop to plate Savanna Mayo. The final run of the inning came when Kristian Foster drew a bases loaded walk.
The Jaguars recorded their last run of the game in the third inning when Smith singled to third base to bring Kaleigh Todd around for the score.
Claire Blount (4-4) celebrated her fourth win of the season in the circle. She tossed her fifth complete game, recorded five strikeouts and only gave up three runs.
Chandler Sparkman (1-1) suffered the loss for the Jaguars. The freshman from Decatur, Ala., gave up six runs in 0.2 innings of work.
UAB will be back in action Wednesday as it hosts Lipscomb University at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
