AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB baseball team suffered its first loss in its last six contests on Tuesday evening. The Blazers fell to Auburn 4-0 on a frigid day at Plainsman Park. UAB’s record drops to 11-6 while the Tigers move to 13-5.
The first two Tigers’ runs came in the first inning. UAB starter Tanner Graham retired two of the first three batters he faced and then induced a groundball that seemed likely to end the frame but an error kept Auburn at the dish. Graham came out of the game shortly after that and made way for Austin Thomas. Blake Logan than launched a double off the left field wall to score two runners.
The Blazers threatened in both the second and fourth innings with two hits in each frame and advancing the runners to scoring position but it was all for naught as fly outs ended the inning each time.
Auburn scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The runs would once again come with two outs on the board. Luke Jarvis drilled a double to deep left center field to score one followed by a single from Conor Davis to score Jarvis the following at-bat to make it 4-0.
UAB was unable to get on-base in the final three innings resulting in the four-run loss to the SEC opponent.
The Tigers outhit UAB 7-6 but the Blazers held the advantage in hits throughout the majority of the ball game.
Stephen Dobbs had the second multi-hit game of his young career as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Thomas finished with a line of 3.1 shutout innings, three hits, one walk, and hit one batter. Graham earned the loss, his first of the season.
Gabe Klobosits registered the victory to move to 1-0. He threw six innings, allowed six hits, one walk, and tallied three strikeouts.
UAB will look to shake the road loss when it opens Conference USA play this weekend. The Blazers make the trip to Western Kentucky and play the first game on Friday at 5 p.m. The following two games are each scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
