Hicklen Earns C-USA Co-Hitter of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Brewer Hicklen has tabbed as the Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week following a stellar performance at the plate that featured scoring two walk-off runs.
“That is great news about Brewer and he certainly deserves to be named CUSA Hitter of the Week,” said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. “Brewer is a great athlete who can impact a game in so many ways. He is an outstanding center fielder who takes runs away from an opponent. And this week he was almost constantly on base, putting tremendous pressure on an opposing pitchers and defenses. We believe Brewer is one of the better players in our league and this week you saw the impact he can have on our team and on a game.”
Hicklen batted 12-for-20 (.600) on the week with eight runs, one double, two triples, the first UAB home run of the season, three RBI, 20 total bases, and four stolen bases. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
The sophomore centerfielder scored both game-winning runs on Sunday against Louisiana-Monroe. Hicklen hit a single in the eighth inning of game one versus ULM and came around to score the winner on a bunt by Colton Schultz two batters later. He then laced a triple to right field in the 10th inning of the second game and scored on a single to left by the next batter Carter Pharis.
Hicklen now leads the team with a .345 average, 19 hits, 11 runs, four triples, and 33 total bases (only player on the team above 20). He leads Conference USA in triples and is one of only seven players nationally with four triples on the year. Hicklen ranks 26th in average, tied for 35th in runs, tied for 15th in total bases and slugging percentage (.600), and is second in stolen bases (five) behind teammate Tyler Tolbert (six).
This is the first time Hicklen has received the Conference Hitt of the Week in his career and the first time a Blazer has been recognized with the award since Esteban Tresgallo earned the honor on May 11, 2015. It’s the second time this season UAB has received a C-USA weekly honor as Garrett Whitlock was tabbed Pitcher of the Week on February 20, 2017.
