Blazers Split on Last Day of Samford/UAB Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Pitching was the story of the night when it came to the UAB softball team on the last day of the Samford/UAB Tournament.
Claire Blount and Megan Smith both pitched a complete game in the split of Indiana and Samford on Sunday at the Samford Softball Stadium.
UAB 0, INDIANA 2
No runs were scored for either team until the sixth inning of the game against Indiana.
The Hoosiers (6-8, 0-0) had a game-high five hits in the 2-0 win over the Blazers and scored the only two runs in the sixth inning when Katie Lacefield doubled to left center bringing around Rachel O’Malley and Shayna Gamm.
UAB (3-9, 0-0) tallied four hits in the game. Destini England started things off for the Blazers with a single up the middle in the first inning.
Danii Fernandez had the second hit for UAB in the third with a single to left field and freshman Natalie Erwin contributed to the hit count with a single to right field in the fourth.
The final hit of the game for the Blazers came off the bat of Rachel Dunsford when she singled through the left side.
Claire Blount (1-2) suffered the loss for the Blazers in the circle. She tossed a complete game, recorded six strikeouts and gave up only two runs.
Emily Goodin (4-3) got the win for the Hoosiers. She gave up only one hit and only walked one batter in the shutout.
UAB 10, SAMFORD 2
UAB’s (4-9, 0-0) bats came to life in the nightcap against Samford. The Blazers recorded 10 runs on nine hits and only committed two errors.
The Blazers struck first in the second inning when Molli Garcia singled through the left side to plate Lizzie Ryan.
Three more runs were tallied in the third inning when Dunsford lifted a three-run home run over the left field wall to give UAB the 4-0 advantage.
The fifth inning saw more action from the Blazers when Mary Warren hit a standup double to left center and scored Madison Millsaps and Joanna Fallen. The final run of the inning came when Garcia doubled and brought Analyse Petree around to score.
The final three runs of the game came in the seventh inning. Petree doubled down the left field line and brought Fallen around for the RBI. Garcia was up next at the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field and plated Dunsford. The final run of the game came when Petree scored on a wild pitch.
Megan Smith (2-1) captured the win for UAB. She tossed a complete game and gave up only one earned run and tallied five strikeouts in her impressive outing.
Rebecca Leonard (0-3) got the loss for the Bulldogs. She gave up four runs and walked four batters in 2.2 innings of work.
The Blazers will be back on the diamond Tuesday as they host No. 10 Alabama at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
