Blazers Fall to Hot Shooting Lady Raiders in Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB women’s basketball team couldn’t slow down the Middle Tennessee offense Sunday afternoon as the Blazers fell to the Lady Raiders 87-56. The Blazers had a trio of players in double figures led by Miyah Barnes and Janeka Williams’ 12 points.
UAB NOTES
- UAB drops to 13-14 this season and 6-10 in C-USA play
- Head coach Randy Norton drops to 62-58 and 31-35 in conference play
- The Blazers hit four 3-pointers, totaling 201 made triples this season; the team’s 201 3-pointers ranks third in the UAB record book for 3-point made field goals in a single season and season and they need 15 more to move into second place
- UAB shot 44.0 percent (22-of-50) from the floor marking the 20th game this season the Blazers have shot over 40 percent from the floor
- The starting lineup of Deanna Kuzmanic, Miyah Barnes, Rachael Childress, Keonna Farmer, and Janeka Williams moves to 6-8 with six losses coming on the road
- UAB’s 44 points given up in the first half ties the most given up this season in conference play this season
- All 13 of the Blazers active players made an appearance in today’s game marking the seventh time this season every player has seen action
- Freshman Miyah Barnes and senior Janeka Williams netted a team-best 12 points; for Barnes it was her third time leading the Blazers in scoring and Williams’ second
- Barnes’ 12 points is the ninth double-figure game of her career and fourth in conference play; she swiped a career-high two steals for the third time in her career
- Williams’ two three-pointers tied her season high and she scored in double figures for the ninth time in her career and seventh time this season; she also reeled in a season high four rebounds
- Junior Keonna Farmer’s 10 points is the ninth double figure game of the season and 16th of her career; Farmer’s five made field goals tied her league play high for the third time this season
- Freshman Rachael Childress’ connected on one 3-pointers, totaling 85 made triples this season; her 85 3-pointers ranks second in the UAB record books for 3-point field goals made in a single season and she needs 18more to move into first place
- Sophomore Deanna Kuzmanic made her 58th consecutive start, the longest active streak on the team; junior Keonna Farmer made 27th career start, a career long; freshman Miyah Barnes made her 24th consecutive start, the most by a freshman on the roster
BREAKING DOWN THE BOX SCORE
- Overall, the Blazers shot 44.0 percent (22-of-50) from the floor while MT shot 55.8 percent overall (29-of-52)
- UAB, the fifth-best 3-point shooting team in the country connected on just 4-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc, while MT was 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from 3-point range.
- UAB dished out seven assists to 18 turnovers while the Lady Raiders tallied 25 assists and 12 turnovers
- From the charity stripe, UAB shot 8-of-18 (44 percent) while MT shot 17-of-23 (74 percent)
- Miyah Barnes and Janeka Williams both totaled 12 points apiece while Keonna Farmer chipped in 10

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UAB and Middle Tennessee came out of the gates hot as the Blazers were 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from the floor, but the Lady Raiders held an early 13-12 lead midway through the first quarter. MT was able to hold a 10-point lead at the end of the opening 10 as the Lady Raiders held UAB to just two points in the final four minutes of the quarter.
- In the second quarter, seven turnovers proved to be costly as UAB scored just 10 points to MT’s 20, allowing the Blue Raiders to lead 44-24 at the break.
- The Blazers battled in the third quarter, but MT’s 8-of-14 showing gave the Lady Raiders a 69-41 lead with 10 minutes to play.
- UAB and MT went shot-for-shot in the fourth and final quarter, but the Blazers were unable to chip away at the defect as they fell on the road, 87-56.
