BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Checking in at No. 9 on the list of UAB football's top 10 moments of its historic 2017 season is A.J. Erdely's recording-setting performance against Rice.
Erdely was a dual threat all season, but facing Rice at Legion Field on Nov. 4, he put together a near flawless passing game which resulted in setting the Conference USA record for completion percentage in a game.
Erdely picked apart the Owls defense, finishing the game 20-of-21 for 197 yards and three touchdown passes. His one incomplete pass was a drop, but nevertheless his 95.2 completion percentage broke the previous C-USA record of 94.7 percent which was done on two separate occasions, the last in 2006.
For his efforts Erdely was named the CFPA National Performer of the Week and earned a Manning Star of the Week nod from the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Honorable Mention All-Conference USA performer had a tremendous season as the Blazers' first-year signal caller. Erdely threw for 2,077 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 61.8 percent of his passes (181-293-4). He also added 295 yards on the ground and a school record-tying 13 rushing TDs.
With 29 total touchdowns, Erdely needs three touchdowns in the Bahamas Bowl to tie and four to set the school record for single-season touchdowns accounted for which is currently held by Joe Webb with 32 in 2009.
