IRVING, Texas – UAB junior forward Caroline Kehrer was of 14 student-athletes across the league to receive the Conference USA Fall Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing fall sports: football, men's & women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball.
"Caroline is a leader on the women's soccer team and with the UAB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee," UAB Assistant Director for Student Development Caitlin Callaghan said. "She leads through her commitment to service in the Birmingham community and serves many hours of her own free time at Children's of Alabama. Additionally, Caroline encourages members of her team to join her in other service opportunities. Caroline has a passion for serving others, and we are very lucky to have her representing UAB women's soccer."
Kehrer boasts a 3.79 GPA in psychology with a minor in human resource management and played an instrumental role in guiding UAB soccer to a 13-4-3 record this season. She ranked third on the team with 17 points and finished the season with seven goals and three assists, helping UAB to its first C-USA Championship since 2013.
Since the fall of 2015 Kehrer has logged 126 hours of community service and volunteers for such organizations as Relay for Life and the Children's of Alabama Children's Hospital.
"Caroline exemplifies what a good teammate is," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "She is always willing to help and be a positive voice on and off the field. She was a main component in our attack this season and we are so excited to see her growth this spring."
