BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's basketball team eclipsed the 80-point mark for the second time this season on the back of four double-digit scoring efforts as the Blazers defeated Miles College 85-42 in Bartow Arena on Wednesday night.
UAB is now 3-0 on the season, the first time it has begun a season 3-0 since 1994-95. The Blazers also improve to 3-0 all-time against Miles College, outscoring the Lady Bears 282-135 in those three meetings.
"I thought the girls were outstanding tonight," head coach Randy Norton said. "Coming off a big win against Southern Illinois, I was a little concerned about a letdown. But, I am really proud of the way we came out. I am excited that we have a little mini-break now. We will have six practices to get ready to go out to San Francisco."
Sophomore Rachael Childress was once again in the driver's seat of the UAB scoring attack, posting 14 points to lead the Blazers in scoring for the second-straight game.
Fellow sophomores Katelynn Thomas and Imani Johnson posted their second double-digit scoring efforts in the win, finishing the game with 14 points and 13 points, respectively, while Barnes finished the game with 12 points and four assists.
Angela Vendrell fell two points shy of her first career double-double, tallying eight points and a team-best 12 rebounds, while junior Deanna Kuzmanic posted nine points and a team-best seven assists in the win.
Miles College (1-1) was led by Victoria Sutton and Frantisha Tyson who each posted 10 points.
As a team, the Blazers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lady Bears 40-14 under the basket while also outrebounding the Lady Bears, 43-31. UAB did a good job sharing the ball as well, dishing out 23 assists to just 11 turnovers.
UAB asserted its offensive dominance immediately, outscoring the Lady Bears 17-2 in the first period behind six points from Kuzmanic and four points from Johnson.
Miles College saw its highest scoring total in the second quarter as it racked up 17 points, but a 27-point quarter by the Blazers propelled by 18 points in the paint gave the Green and Gold a 44-19 advantage at halftime.
Two Vendrell layups and a Childress 3-pointer provided a 7-0 run to open the second half and push the Blazer lead to 51-19 with 7:16 to play in the third period.
The Blazers held firm throughout much of the third quarter before capping the period off with an old-fashioned three-point play by Whytney Singleton to open a 69-32 lead with 10 minutes to play.
UAB took its largest lead of the night with 1:01 left in the game as Maya Garland connected on a free throw to open an 80-45 lead. From there, the Blazers were able to cruise to the final buzzer and secure the 85-52 victory.
The Green and Gold will hit the road for the first time this season as the Blazers travel to San Francisco to compete in the St. Mary's Tournament. UAB will face on Indiana to open the tournament on Nov. 24 before finishing out the competition against UC-Santa Barbara on Nov. 25.
