UAB Hosts Southern Illinois in Game Two of Homestand

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off an 87-72 victory in its home opener over Mississippi Valley State, the UAB women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Monday as it hosts Southern Illinois in Bartow Arena at 4:30 p.m.
The contest will be the first game of a doubleheader with the UAB men's basketball team, which hosts Chattanooga at 7 p.m.
UAB (1-0) improved to 19-4 in non-conference home games and 4-1 in home openers under Norton with its victory over Mississippi Valley State. The Blazers were led by sophomore Rachael Childress, who finished the contest with 21 points and 11 rebounds to record her first career double-double.
Fellow sophomore Katelynn Thomas was also a force for the Blazers in her first career start, leading all scorers with 22 points in a career-high 20 minutes of action, while Angela Vendrell made her first career start and set career highs in nearly every statistical category.
As a team, the Blazers shot 50 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from behind the arc while outrebounding the Devilettes 55-31 and outscoring them in the paint, 42-26.
Southern Illinois (1-0) is coming off a season-opening 84-72 home victory over UT-Martin. Senior guard Kylie Giebelhausen led the Salukis with 25 points, three assists and four steals in 38 minutes played.
The two teams will meet for the third time in program history with UAB holding a 2-0 advantage in the series. The last meeting between the two came last season when the Blazers defeated the Salukis 64-49 in Carbondale, Illinois. The Green and Gold is 5-3 all-time against schools from the Missouri Valley Conference.
UAB is looking for its first 2-0 start since the 2012-13 season when it recorded victories against Austin Peay and Alabama A&M to open the year.
For tickets, UAB fans have the opportunity to purchase a Gold Card which allows access to six different sports, including women's basketball, baseball and softball, throughout the upcoming season.
A single admission Gold Card is $65, while a dual admission card can be purchased for $120, admission for three is $165, and a 4-pack of Gold Cards is $200. Fans who purchase a Gold Card will be given a membership card they show to gain admission into each specific event. Fans can purchase a Gold Card at the UAB Athletics Ticket Office located at Bartow Arena, or by calling 205-975-UAB1.
