Blazers Impress at the ITA Southern Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Tim Dollman and senior Stefan Gonzalez each advanced to the Round of 16 as the UAB men's tennis team closed out competition at the ITA Southern Regional in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this past weekend.

"Overall, I thought we had a good performance," head coach Derek Tarr said. "Gonzalez and Kenton Parton both made it through qualifying and Gonzalez registered a great win in the main draw over (Thibault) Cancel of Alabama. Dollman had a good tournament as well, losing to the No. 1 seed in the third round."

Dollman entered the tournament in the Round of 32 as the ninth overall seed, where he topped Alabama's Zhe Zhou 7-5, 6-3 to earn his eighth singles win of the fall season. He found himself in a battle in the Round of 16 against top-seeded Constantin Schmitz of Tulane before falling 6-4, 6-3.

Gonzalez took a different path to the Round of 16, earning two wins in singles qualifying against Jacksonville State's Andres Gomez (6-3, 6-4) and Auburn's Michael Durham (5-7, 6-3, 6-3).

The senior's best performance came in the Round of 32 when he defeated the No. 3-seeded Thibault Cancel of Alabama 6-2, 6-1 to earn his spot in the Round of 16 where he fell to Tulane's Luis Erlenbusch 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3).

Dollman and Gonzalez also played together in doubles, winning 8-1 over Mississippi State's Strahinja Rakic and Hunter Harrison in the Round of 64 before falling to Auburn's Alex Rushin and Brandon Laubser 8-6 in the Round of 32.

UAB also saw Parton advance into the the main draw after three-straight wins against his opposition to earn a spot in the main draw. He met Alabama's Edson Ortiz in the Round of 64, falling to the Crimson Tide's sophomore 6-4, 6-4.

The Blazers return to action on November 3 when the team competes in the PRC Collegiate Invite in Pelham, Ala.
