Childress Earns C-USA Freshman of the Week Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB’s leading scorer Rachael Childress was named Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
“Rachael is a very special player and she’s shown that time and time again this season,” head coach Randy Norton said. “I’m very proud of her for earning the C-USA award this week – but Rachael brings it every since day, and I’m happy that her hard work and dedication is recognized. Last week was a tough week on our team, but we showed resilience and I’m excited for whats in store this season.
Childress, who leads all C-USA freshmen with 11.0 points per contest, averaged 15.5 points in a pair of games last week. In UAB’s 62-61 overtime win against Rice, Childress paced the Blazers offense with a career-best 18 points, shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
“I’m so excited to earn the league’s Freshman of the Week,” Childress said. “I wouldn’t have gotten it without the help of my teammates and I’m excited to hit the road this week with them.”
The Moulton, Ala., native, who averages a team-high 11.0 points per game, has averaged 14.7 points per game since earning a spot in the Blazers starting lineup.
Childress leads all C-USA freshmen in 3-pointers per game (2.6) which ranks second overall in the league. Her 39.8 percent showing from long range ranks fourth overall in the league, leads C-USA’s freshmen and ranks sixth among the nations freshmen.
The award marks UAB’s third of the season, which ties Marshall for the most. Miyah Barnes earned a pair of Freshman of the Week honors to start the season.
