BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was 25 years ago today that Jim Hilyer and the UAB football team played its first game in program history.
That game, which took place in Jackson, Miss., came at Millsaps College on Sept. 7, 1991. Despite the loss, UAB finished 4-3-2 in its first season of college football.
Hilyer coached the Blazers from 1991-94 and finished with a record of 27-12-2. The first two years of UAB’s program were spent at the Division III level, before switching to I-AA in 1993 and finishing with a 9-2 record that season.
Hilyer, who is still a member of the UAB program, currently serves as an administrative volunteer for the Blazers.
"It's great to have him out here," head coach Bill Clark said. "He's got a wealth of experience and knowledge. It's great to have the guy who started the football program here."
The Blazers are in their second week of practice following last month’s fall camp which culminated in a Green and Gold game on August 29 in which Gold defeated Green 33-10.
